Megalithic structure, Coornahahilly, Co. Cork

On the east-facing slope of Coornahahilly Mountain in County Cork, inside a coniferous forest, a wedge-shaped stone chamber sits quietly among ridges of outcropping rock.

What makes it unusual is not simply its age, but the ambiguity of its existence: it may be a prehistoric megalithic structure, or it may be something far more improvised, or it may, at some point in its long life, have been both.

The structure is formed from large slabs of stone. One, measuring roughly 2.8 metres long and 1.2 metres high, has broken away from a natural rock outcrop running east to west across the hillside, and leans slightly northward. A second upright slab, about 1.85 metres long, runs parallel and creates a narrow wedge-shaped chamber between them, open at the west-southwest end and tapering to a near-closed gap of just 22 centimetres at the east-northeast end. The roof is made up of three smaller slabs, the widest spanning about 75 centimetres, all sloping downward toward the closed end. A wedge tomb, to use the correct term, is a type of Neolithic or early Bronze Age megalithic monument common in the south and west of Ireland, typically consisting of a tapered gallery covered by capstones and oriented with the wider entrance facing the setting sun. This structure broadly follows that pattern, though one notable detail complicates any straightforward classification: an arrangement of stones outside the entrance appears to be a later modification made to adapt the chamber as a shelter for animals. A triangular fragment broken from one of the upright slabs remains in place on the ground nearby, alongside smaller stones. Whether the original builders shaped these slabs deliberately or worked with what the mountain's geology offered them so readily is something the site itself does not resolve.
