Creevykeel is one of the finest examples of a full court tomb in Ireland, a type of Neolithic monument in which an unroofed oval or D-shaped forecourt opens into one or more roofed burial galleries built from upright stone slabs and topped with capstones. These structures were raised by farming communities somewhere around five thousand years ago, long before anything that might be called a town existed on this island, and their precise ritual purposes remain a matter of careful inference rather than settled fact.

Excavations carried out at Creevykeel in 1935 by a Harvard Archaeological Mission produced cremated human bone, Neolithic pottery, and flint tools from within the gallery chambers, confirming the site's use as a communal tomb. The monument consists of a long trapezoidal cairn, wider at the eastern end where the court opens to receive visitors or mourners, narrowing as it extends westward over the burial chambers. Two additional small cists, stone-lined boxes used for burial, were found inserted into the cairn at a later period, suggesting the site continued to carry significance for communities well after its original construction.

The site is in state care and is openly accessible. The court itself is large enough to walk into, and the scale of the uprights becomes apparent only once you are standing among them. The eastern forecourt, with its curved horns of stone drawing inward, gives a strong sense of the deliberate spatial choreography these builders had in mind, funnelling movement and attention toward the chamber entrance beyond.
