Megalithic Tombs
Near the small County Sligo settlement of Culleens, a megalithic structure survives in the landscape, the kind of prehistoric construction that predates written record by several thousand years.
Megalithic monuments, a broad category covering everything from portal tombs to passage graves and stone circles, were typically raised during the Neolithic or early Bronze Age, when communities in Ireland were investing enormous collective effort in marking the land with durable stone. That one survives here, in this quiet corner of north Connacht, is itself a quiet fact worth sitting with.
