Seventeen stones in total, seven of them still upright and ten lying flat, make up a prehistoric arrangement that nobody has quite managed to categorise. A large slab, measuring around 1.5 metres at its widest, rests across two of the standing stones and one of the prostrate ones, giving part of the structure the appearance of a rudimentary chamber. Locally, this type of feature was known as a "Giant's Grave", a folk term applied across Ireland to megalithic structures whose original purpose had long been forgotten.

The site first appeared on the 1913 edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map, which suggests it was at least partially visible and recognisable at that point. When surveyors documented it, they interpreted the arrangement as the remains of a stone circle, a prehistoric monument type in which standing stones are set in a roughly circular pattern, often associated with ceremonial use. That reading was later questioned by Seán Ó Nualláin in his 1989 Survey of the Megalithic Tombs of Ireland, which covers County Sligo. Ó Nualláin noted that a stone circle was not a very likely interpretation, but also concluded that the structure's true nature could not be determined given its current state. Whether some stones have fallen over time, been disturbed by later agricultural activity, or whether the original form was always ambiguous, the record does not say. What remains is a monument that has outlasted the knowledge of what it was built to be.
