Megalithic Tombs
In the townland of Kilcornan in County Clare, a megalithic structure sits on the landscape, recorded and classified but largely unknown beyond the bare fact of its existence.
Megalithic monuments, a broad category covering everything from portal tombs and court cairns to wedge tombs and standing stones, were raised across Ireland during the Neolithic and Bronze Age periods, roughly between five thousand and three thousand years ago. They are among the oldest built things in the country, and Clare, sitting at the edge of the Burren's limestone plateau, has more than its share of them.
What makes this particular example quietly notable is precisely how little is currently in the public domain about it. It has been recorded and given a classification, which means fieldwork of some kind has taken place and someone, at some point, judged it significant enough to log. Beyond that, the details of its form, its condition, and its local history remain at a remove from the casual enquirer.
