Megalithic Tombs

Megalithic structure, Shronebirrane, Co. Kerry

On an east-facing hillside above Loughanunaghan Lake in south-west Kerry, a large stone slab lies flat in the rough pasture, most of it consumed by blanket bog.

What makes this more than a fallen rock is what sits beneath it: a small chamber-like space at the eastern end, roughly 75 centimetres wide and 30 centimetres high, extending at least 75 centimetres inward, with evidence of further stones within. Scattered around it are additional prostrate slabs and two smaller stones, one still upright, one leaning, near the structure's north-east corner.

The site belongs to a loose cluster of prehistoric features on this stretch of hillside. A standing stone-pair, one of the paired monoliths found across Kerry and typically associated with the Bronze Age, stands roughly five metres to the north-west, and the traces of a hut site lie approximately the same distance to the west. Whether these features were in use simultaneously or accumulated across different periods is not recorded, but their proximity suggests this hillside held some significance to the people who worked or moved through it. The precise function of the megalithic structure itself is unclear; the chamber beneath the main slab is too small to be a conventional portal tomb, and the bog cover makes full assessment difficult. It may be a remnant of a more substantial monument whose other elements have shifted or sunk over millennia.

The bog that now obscures much of the structure is also, in a way, its custodian. Blanket bog, which forms gradually over thousands of years in waterlogged upland conditions, has a tendency to preserve what lies beneath it even as it hides the shape of things. Much of what survives here, the arrangement of fallen slabs, the chamber space, may owe its survival partly to that slow engulfment.
