Megalithic tomb, An Ghleadraigh, Co. Mayo

In the townland of An Ghleadraigh, in County Mayo, a megalithic tomb sits in the landscape doing what such structures have done for several thousand years: outlasting almost everything around it.

These tombs, built during the Neolithic period roughly between 4000 and 2000 BC, were communal burial monuments, constructed from large upright stones capped with massive lintels, and they are scattered across Ireland in their hundreds. What makes any individual example worth pausing over is usually the particular quality of its setting, or the specific tradition of monument-building it represents, whether a court tomb, a portal tomb, a passage tomb, or a wedge tomb, each type carrying its own architectural logic and its own geography of distribution.

Mayo is unusually rich in Neolithic remains, partly because the blanket bog that crept across the west of Ireland in the millennia after these monuments were built has preserved features that elsewhere were ploughed away or quarried for building stone. An Ghleadraigh, whose Irish name suggests a place associated with noise or clattering, perhaps a stream, sits within a county where the land itself has a long habit of keeping secrets. The megalith here is one of many Mayo examples that remain only partially documented, known to exist, recorded in outline, but not yet fully examined or described in any publicly available form.
