Megalithic Tombs
In the townland of Ballinulty, in County Mayo, a megalithic tomb sits in the landscape, largely unrecorded in any publicly accessible form.
Megalithic tombs are among the oldest surviving human constructions in Ireland, built during the Neolithic period, roughly between 4000 and 2000 BC, as collective burial monuments and, likely, as markers of territory or ancestral connection. Mayo has a notable concentration of them, from the well-documented court tombs of the north to more obscure portal and wedge tombs scattered across farmland and bog. Ballinulty's example belongs to that quieter category, the kind of monument that endures without commentary.
