Megalithic tomb, Corluddy, Co. Kilkenny

In the townland of Corluddy in County Kilkenny, a megalithic tomb survives, the kind of monument that predates written history, Christianity, and the earliest kingdoms of Ireland by thousands of years.

Megalithic tombs, a broad category covering portal tombs, passage tombs, wedge tombs, and court tombs among others, were built during the Neolithic period, generally between around 4000 and 2000 BC, and were used as collective burial places as well as, most likely, sites of ritual significance for the communities that constructed them. That one sits in Corluddy is itself a quiet fact worth pausing over.
