Megalithic tomb – court tomb, Creevagh, Co. Mayo

In the townland of Creevagh in County Mayo, a court tomb has been standing since the Neolithic period, its stones arranged in a form that predates written history by thousands of years.

Court tombs are among the oldest monument types in Ireland, typically consisting of a roofed gallery divided into burial chambers, fronted by an open semicircular or U-shaped forecourt. That forecourt, open to the sky, is thought to have served a ceremonial function for the communities who built these structures, somewhere around 4000 to 3500 BC. The example at Creevagh is one of a considerable concentration of such tombs found across the west and north of Ireland, where the limestone and sandstone landscapes seem almost to have encouraged their construction.

Very little specific detail about the Creevagh tomb has been made publicly available, which is itself a quietly telling fact. Many of Ireland's megalithic monuments remain incompletely catalogued or studied, known to local people and to archaeologists in the field but not yet fully documented in the sources most people would turn to. The broader tradition of court tomb building in Mayo places this structure within a landscape that was, in the Neolithic, far more densely settled and actively farmed than is sometimes imagined. These communities cleared woodland, raised cattle, and buried their dead in communal stone monuments that were returned to over generations, suggesting a relationship with place and with ancestry that was both practical and ceremonial.
