Megalithic tomb – court tomb, Doonadoba, Co. Mayo

In the townland of Doonadoba in County Mayo, a court tomb survives from the Neolithic period, a category of megalithic monument that represents some of the oldest constructed architecture in Ireland.

Court tombs take their name from the open, usually semicircular forecourt of upright stones that precedes the roofed gallery where the dead were placed. They are found predominantly in the northern half of Ireland and are generally dated to roughly 4000 BCE, making them contemporaries of early farming communities who were clearing the land and beginning to shape the Irish landscape in ways that would persist for millennia.

Doonadoba itself is a small, quiet townland in Mayo, a county that holds a considerable concentration of megalithic remains, owing in part to the durability of the local stone and in part to the relative sparseness of later development in some areas. Court tombs in this region were communal burial monuments, likely used over generations, and the forecourt area is thought to have served a ceremonial function as well as a practical one, perhaps as a space for ritual activity connected to the interment of remains. The specific history of this particular structure, including any record of excavation, the condition of the surviving stones, or any finds associated with the site, is not currently available in the public record.
