Megalithic tomb – court tomb, Doonbeakin, Co. Sligo

In the townland of Doonbeakin, County Sligo, a court tomb survives from the Neolithic period, its presence quiet and largely unremarked in a county that tends to draw attention to the more celebrated megalithic landscapes around Carrowmore and Carrowkeel.

Court tombs are among the oldest monument types in Ireland, dating broadly to around 4000 BCE, and take their name from the open, usually semicircular forecourt formed by standing stones at one end of an elongated cairn. This forecourt is thought to have served a ceremonial function, a gathering place for rituals associated with the dead, before one passed into the roofed gallery chambers beyond.

The Doonbeakin tomb is recorded in Seán Ó Nualláin's Survey of the Megalithic Tombs of Ireland, Volume V, covering County Sligo, published by the Stationery Office in Dublin in 1989. Ó Nualláin's survey remains the foundational catalogue for Sligo's megalithic heritage, systematically documenting the county's remarkable concentration of prehistoric monuments. Court tombs of this type are generally associated with early farming communities, and their distribution across the north and west of Ireland suggests networks of related groups who shared burial traditions across considerable distances. Sligo, with its varied limestone landscape and fertile glacial soils, supported dense Neolithic settlement, and tombs like the one at Doonbeakin are physical traces of that deep habitation.
