Megalithic Tombs
On the Atlantic-facing flanks of Achill Island, near the small settlement of Doogort, there is a megalithic tomb, the kind of structure that predates written history in Ireland by several thousand years.
Megalithic tombs, built from large stones and typically dating to the Neolithic period, were constructed as collective burial monuments and sometimes as markers of territory or ritual landscape. This one sits in a part of Mayo that already carries considerable prehistoric weight, Achill being an island scattered with field systems, promontory forts, and other remnants of long occupation. What makes this particular tomb quietly striking is precisely how little has filtered through about it.
