Megalithic Tombs
Near the village of Keel on Achill Island, a megalithic tomb sits within a landscape shaped as much by Atlantic weather as by human hands.
Megalithic tombs, built during the Neolithic period roughly five thousand years ago, served as communal burial sites and markers of territory, their large stone chambers and covering mounds representing some of the earliest monumental architecture in Ireland. That one survives in this corner of Co. Mayo is not itself surprising; the west of Ireland has a notable concentration of such structures. What is striking is how little has been formally documented and made publicly available about this particular example, leaving it as a presence on the land that outpaces the paper record attached to it.
