Megalithic Tombs

Megalithic tomb, Lackafin, Co. Monaghan

On a low-lying spur of land in County Monaghan, a few ancient stones sit in a small mound, unremarkable to a passing eye but carrying a name that suggests people once regarded them with a certain wariness.

The name appears just once in the cartographic record, printed in gothic lettering on the 1907 edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map: Cloghaphooka, from the Irish Cloch an Phúca, meaning the ghost's stone. That the name was not carried forward onto later editions makes it easy to miss entirely, and the monument itself has slipped into the kind of obscurity that comes from being both fragmentary and hard to classify.

What remains of the site is a mound roughly 4.5 metres long and 6 metres wide, into which three stones have been set. The most significant of these stands at the southern end, a tall, gable-shaped stone approximately 1.4 metres high and only about 0.2 metres thick, which may have served as a back stone for a megalithic chamber. Around 3 metres to the north sit two lower stones, possibly jambstones, the uprights that would have framed the entrance or sides of a tomb. The area between these stones has been dug out at some point, which complicates any attempt to read the original arrangement. Megalithic tombs in Ireland were built during the Neolithic and early Bronze Age periods, typically as communal burial monuments, and they survive in a range of forms including portal tombs, court tombs, and passage tombs. The remains here are too scanty to say which type this might have been.

The ghost's stone, then, is a monument that resists easy conclusions. It is ruined enough that archaeology cannot firmly categorise it, and obscure enough that the one map edition which named it has long since been superseded. What persists is the name itself, a hint that local memory once attached something uncanny to these stones long after their original purpose had been forgotten.
