Megalithic tomb – passage tomb, Graigue, Co. Sligo

In the townland of Graigue in County Sligo, a passage tomb sits quietly among the broader prehistoric landscape of a county already famous for the great megalithic complexes at Carrowmore and Carrowkeel.

Passage tombs are among the oldest monumental structures in Ireland, typically consisting of a stone-lined corridor leading to a central burial chamber, all covered beneath a cairn of loose stones or earth. What makes individual examples like this one worth pausing over is precisely their anonymity; they lack the visitor infrastructure of the well-known sites, and yet they represent the same impulse, the same investment of communal labour, and the same ritual relationship with the dead that shaped Neolithic society across the island.

The tomb at Graigue is recorded in Seán Ó Nualláin's Survey of the Megalithic Tombs of Ireland, Volume V, covering County Sligo, published by the Stationery Office in Dublin in 1989. Ó Nualláin's county-by-county survey remains one of the foundational catalogues of Irish prehistoric monuments, systematically documenting the distribution, form, and condition of tombs that might otherwise go unrecorded. Sligo's concentration of passage tombs is exceptional even by Irish standards, and the Graigue example contributes to a picture of the county as a significant centre of Neolithic activity. The monument is designated a National Monument in State care, assigned the number 153, which affords it legal protection under Irish heritage legislation.
