Megalithic tomb, Slievemore, Co. Mayo

On the northern slopes of Slievemore, the great quartzite mountain that dominates Achill Island, there sits a megalithic tomb, one of many prehistoric burial monuments scattered across this part of County Mayo.

Megalithic tombs are ancient stone structures, typically dating from the Neolithic period, built to house the dead and very likely to serve some ceremonial or territorial function for the communities that raised them. That Slievemore should have one is not surprising; the mountain and its surroundings are extraordinarily dense with prehistoric remains, from court tombs to a deserted village whose roofless stone cottages run in a long line along the lower slopes.

Slievemore itself rises to around 671 metres and has drawn human settlement and ritual activity for millennia. The wider Achill landscape contains some of the most concentrated early prehistoric archaeology in the west of Ireland, a reflection both of its relatively undisturbed terrain and of the farming and pastoral communities who worked these Atlantic slopes long before written record. Megalithic tombs in this region often occupy prominent or elevated positions, placed where they would have been visible across the landscape, marking territory, ancestry, or the boundary between the living world and whatever lay beyond it.
