Megalithic tomb – wedge tomb, Carrowleagh, Co. Mayo

In a county already thick with prehistoric remains, a wedge tomb at Carrowleagh quietly holds its ground somewhere in the Mayo landscape, largely unvisited and unannounced.

Wedge tombs are among the most common megalithic monument types in Ireland, gallery-style burial structures that taper in both height and width from front to back, and are generally associated with the late Neolithic and early Bronze Age, roughly 2500 to 2000 BC. What makes any individual example worth pausing over is precisely that ordinariness, the sense that people were doing this repeatedly, across generations and across townlands, as a normal and considered way of marking the dead.

The tomb at Carrowleagh is documented in Ruaidhrí de Valera and Seán Ó Nualláin's Survey of the Megalithic Tombs of Ireland, Volume II, covering County Mayo, published by the Stationery Office in Dublin in 1964. De Valera and Ó Nualláin spent years systematically recording these monuments across the island, and their Mayo volume remains a foundational reference for the county's prehistoric funerary landscape. Mayo as a whole contains a remarkable concentration of wedge tombs, and Carrowleagh sits within that broader pattern of use, a single data point in what was clearly a widespread and organised ritual tradition across the west of Ireland during the Bronze Age.
