Megalithic tomb – wedge tomb, Cregg, Co. Galway

In a field of rough pasture and jutting limestone near Cregg in County Galway, a prehistoric burial monument sits in a state of considerable ruin, reduced over the millennia to a scatter of upright stones barely hinting at the structure they once formed.

It is the kind of place easy to walk past without registering its significance, yet what remains still preserves the essential logic of a wedge tomb, one of the most numerous megalithic tomb types in Ireland, built by farming communities during the late Neolithic and into the Early Bronze Age.

Wedge tombs take their name from their characteristic shape, wider and higher at the entrance end and tapering toward the rear. This example, recorded by MacMahon in 1978, follows that convention in its east-west alignment, with the wider, western end forming the entrance. A septal stone, a dividing slab set across the interior, separates the portico from the main burial chamber beyond it. Of the portico, only a single façade stone and one sidestone remain at the western end. The chamber itself retains one sidestone on the north side and two on the south. The whole structure, a gallery roughly four and a half metres long and just over a metre wide, sits within the remnants of a roughly oval mound. The dimensions are modest but consistent with the type, and the survival of the septal stone is useful, since it confirms the basic two-part internal arrangement that defines these monuments.

The tomb lies approximately three kilometres to the west-southwest of the village of Abbey, set among outcropping rock in open farmland. The landscape here still carries the texture of the terrain these communities would have known, and the limestone breaking through the surface soil is the same raw material the tomb's builders would have worked with.
