Megalithic tomb – wedge tomb, Leenane, Co. Cork

On a south-east-facing slope above Crookhaven, in the far south-west corner of Cork, a wedge tomb sits quietly within an oval mound, its stones still largely in place after perhaps four or five thousand years.

What makes the spot quietly arresting is the company it keeps: two other megalithic tombs lie roughly 500 metres to the north, in the townlands of Arduslough and Tooreen, making this a cluster of prehistoric monuments on a single low mountain ridge. That kind of concentration is not accidental. These sites were almost certainly deliberate statements in the landscape, placed to be seen, approached, or related to one another in ways we can no longer fully read.

A wedge tomb, for those unfamiliar with the type, is a Neolithic or Early Bronze Age burial monument whose chamber tapers in both height and width from one end to the other, giving it its name. This example is modest in scale: the chamber runs 3.2 metres in length and 1.3 metres wide, open to the south-west, with a single sidestone on each flank and a backstone closing the eastern end. Two tall stones to the south-west may once have formed some kind of entrance feature, though their precise original function is uncertain. The whole structure is incorporated into an oval mound measuring 14.5 metres on its north-east to south-west axis and 11.5 metres across; a number of stones protrude from the mound's surface, suggesting a more elaborate fabric beneath. The tomb was documented in detail by Ruaidhrí de Valera and Seán Ó Nualláin in their 1982 survey of megalithic tombs across Counties Cork, Kerry, Limerick, and Tipperary, a painstaking county-by-county inventory that remains a foundational reference for Irish prehistoric archaeology.
