Megalithic tomb – wedge tomb, Lisgoogan, Co. Clare

In the townland of Lisgoogan in County Clare, a wedge tomb sits in the landscape, largely unannounced and sparsely documented.

Wedge tombs are the most numerous megalithic tomb type in Ireland, built during the late Neolithic and into the early Bronze Age, roughly between 2500 and 2000 BC. They take their name from their shape: a roofed gallery that narrows and lowers from one end to the other, typically oriented with the wider end facing roughly west or south-west. Clare has a particular concentration of them, scattered across the Burren's limestone pavements and into the quieter, less-visited farmland beyond.
