Midden, An Geata Mór, Co. Mayo

Near An Geata Mór on the Mayo coast, a recorded midden sits quietly in the archaeological register, the kind of site that rarely draws attention but repays it.

A midden is essentially a refuse heap left by earlier inhabitants, most often a accumulation of shells, animal bones, ash, and discarded tools built up over generations of occupation. Along Ireland's western seaboard, these deposits can represent thousands of years of coastal life, and their contents, when excavated, offer some of the most direct evidence available of how people actually ate, worked, and survived in a given place.
