Midden, Barr Thráú, Co. Mayo

At Barr Thráú, a townland on the Mayo coast, there is a midden, a term for a prehistoric refuse heap, typically composed of discarded shellfish, animal bone, and other domestic waste left behind by early coastal communities.

These accumulations, unglamorous by nature, are among the most revealing archaeological features a landscape can hold. The contents of a midden can tell us what people ate, how they organised their daily lives, and across what periods a site was occupied. That this one has been formally recorded as a monument is itself a quiet indication that it carries some archaeological weight.
