This is a shell midden, essentially an ancient rubbish heap of food waste, and the site extends for roughly ten to fifteen metres, with the largest concentrations of shells visible as dense accumulations within the deposit. What makes it quietly remarkable is its legibility: the evidence is simply there in the earth, open to the sea air, neither excavated nor enclosed.

The midden was identified by Cormac Galvin, and the deposit sits approximately three to four metres above the high water mark on a headland above the strand. The shells are predominantly oysters, and some smaller fragments appear to have been burnt, which is a pattern seen at many coastal middens across Ireland and Atlantic Europe, where shellfish were roasted before or during consumption, or where hearth debris accumulated alongside food waste. Middens of this kind can range in date from the Mesolithic period through to the early modern era, and without excavation it is difficult to assign a precise age to this one. The surrounding ground rises to rough grazing at best, suggesting the headland was never heavily developed, which may partly explain why the deposit has survived and remained visible at the surface.

Access is straightforward from the shoreline, though the tidal position is worth checking before approaching, as the route along the strand will be affected by the tide. The shell deposits are visible from the shore itself, making the site easy to read without any need to disturb the bank.
