Settlement Sites
In the marram-covered dunes east of Lackan Bay in County Mayo, there is, or was, a midden.
A midden is essentially a prehistoric or early historic rubbish deposit, typically composed of shells, animal bone, ash, and the other leavings of human settlement, and these accumulations are among the more quietly revealing archaeological finds a landscape can offer. This particular one is unusual not for what it contains, but for the fact that nobody has been able to find it since it was first reported.
