Settlement Sites
Along the townland of Imleach Beag Thuaidh in County Mayo, there lies a midden, one of the quieter categories of archaeological site and one that repays a moment's thought.
A midden is, at its simplest, a refuse heap, the accumulated cast-offs of a community's daily life: shells, bones, pottery fragments, ash, and occasionally more deliberate deposits. That description understates their value considerably. Where more monumental sites record ambition or ceremony, a midden records the ordinary, and the ordinary turns out to be exactly what archaeologists most need to reconstruct how people actually lived, ate, and moved through a landscape.
