A midden is, at its most basic, a prehistoric rubbish heap, typically composed of discarded shells, animal bones, ash, and other domestic refuse. What makes them archaeologically valuable is precisely that ordinariness: they preserve, in compressed and sometimes extraordinary detail, evidence of what people ate, how they lived, and how long they occupied a place. Coastal and estuarine middens in particular can contain thousands of shellfish remains alongside fish bones, charcoal, and occasionally human burials or worked flint.

The Luffertan site sits within a county that has no shortage of prehistoric remains, from the megalithic cemetery at Carrowmore to the passage tomb complex on Knocknarea, but a midden operates on a far more intimate scale than those monuments. Where a megalithic tomb speaks to ceremony and collective memory, a midden speaks to Tuesday morning, to the meal that was prepared and the debris that was left behind. The specific character and date of the Luffertan deposit remain, for the moment, incompletely documented in the public record, which is itself a reason to note it: not every site arrives with a tidy narrative attached.
