Midden, Rathdown, Co. Wicklow

Coastal erosion along the Wicklow shoreline near Rathdown Castle has been doing the work of archaeology by accident, gradually exposing a midden, essentially a rubbish heap, that has lain undisturbed within the castle grounds for centuries.

Middens are among the most informative features an archaeologist can encounter; what people discarded tells you a great deal more about daily life than what they chose to preserve. What makes this one particularly interesting is that it may actually predate the medieval castle itself, meaning the accumulation of waste here could represent continuous human activity across more than one phase of occupation at the site.
