Midden, Rathlee, Co. Sligo

On the coast of Rathlee in County Sligo, there is nothing left to see, and that, in a quiet way, is the point.

A shell midden, the compacted refuse of ancient shellfish consumption left by people who gathered and ate along this shoreline, once lay concealed within a small, saucer-shaped earthen enclosure. It was only when that enclosure was levelled, most likely during agricultural improvement work, that the midden came to light at all. Now even that brief moment of visibility has passed, and no remains are detectable at ground level.

Middens are among the most unassuming forms of archaeological evidence. They are essentially prehistoric or early historic rubbish deposits, often built up over generations as communities repeatedly returned to the same spot to process food. Shell middens in particular are common along the Irish coastline, where communities relied heavily on marine resources, but they are rarely dramatic in appearance even when intact. What makes the Rathlee example quietly notable is its double concealment: it was not recorded on any edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch maps, the standard cartographic baseline for Irish field archaeology, meaning it existed entirely outside the official record until local knowledge and the accidental intervention of ground-levelling brought it to attention. The enclosure within which it sat, a shallow, dish-like feature in the landscape, has since been obliterated, taking with it whatever spatial context might have helped explain the site's original use or date.
