Fulling was a critical stage in woollen cloth production: woven fabric was pounded repeatedly, usually by heavy water-driven hammers, to clean it, thicken it, and mat the fibres together into a denser, more durable material. The process required a reliable flow of water and, in rural Ireland, these mills were once scattered across townlands wherever sheep-farming and weaving made the trade viable.
