Mills
At Rouryglen in County Cork, the recorded remains of a fulling mill mark a piece of the rural textile economy that has almost entirely vanished from the Irish landscape.
Fulling mills were used to finish woven woollen cloth, beating and cleansing it with water and wooden hammers to thicken and felt the fibres, a process that transformed rough homespun into durable fabric. That such a mill existed here at all is a small but telling sign of how industrially active Ireland's countryside once was, long before that activity left any obvious trace on the ground.
