Mills
On the edge of Loughrea, a town in east County Galway that grew around its medieval Carmelite friary and the shallow lake that gives it its name, there stands a mill whose particular history remains, for now, largely unrecorded in the public domain.
Mills were once a central feature of Irish rural life, harnessing the flow of rivers and streams to grind grain, full cloth, or later to drive early industrial machinery, and the townland around Loughrea would have depended heavily on such a structure for the processing of local agricultural produce. That this one is catalogued as a monument at all suggests it retains enough physical presence to be considered archaeologically significant.
