Mine – copper, Derryclogher, Co. Cork

In the townland of Derryclogher in County Cork, the ground holds evidence of copper extraction, a reminder that the south-west of Ireland was once one of the more industrially active mining regions in Europe.

Cork and Kerry sit atop copper-bearing geology that drew prospectors and mining companies from the eighteenth century onward, and individual workings like this one were scattered across the landscape in considerable numbers, many of them now reduced to little more than spoil heaps, collapsed adits, or faint surface depressions that are easy to walk past without registering what they represent.

Copper mining in this part of Ireland has roots stretching back to the Bronze Age, when the metal was smelted locally and traded widely, but the more visible industrial phase came with the commercial operations of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Companies, frequently with Welsh or English investment behind them, sank shafts and drove horizontal tunnels into hillsides across the region, employing local labour under conditions that were often dangerous and poorly rewarded. The ore extracted was sometimes processed on site and sometimes shipped elsewhere for smelting. When prices fell or seams ran thin, mines were abandoned quickly, leaving behind the physical scars of the enterprise without much in the way of documentation at the local level.
