Moated site, Portauns, Co. Limerick

In the reclaimed pastures north of Portauns, County Limerick, a remarkable medieval earthwork lies partially hidden amongst trees and overgrown banks.

This moated site, positioned just north of a stream that marks the boundary with Tobernea East, represents what archaeologist H.A. Wheeler identified in 1974 as the probable remains of a medieval moated house; a fortified dwelling that would have provided both status and security to its inhabitants during the turbulent Middle Ages.

The earthwork forms an impressive sub-circular enclosure measuring approximately 93 metres north to south and 83 metres east to west. Its defensive design consists of multiple elements: an inner bank surrounded by a water-filled fosse (or moat), with an additional outer bank providing extra protection. A gap in the western section of the outer bank likely served as the original entrance. While a post-1700 field boundary now cuts through the northern portion of the site, and the southern defences have been breached by a stream, the overall structure remains clearly visible on modern aerial imagery, with tree lines marking the surviving banks.

Historical maps reveal how this monument has endured through the centuries. The 1840 Ordnance Survey six-inch map depicts it as a large circular earthwork, whilst the more detailed 1897 twenty-five-inch edition shows the full complexity of its defensive features. Today, satellite imagery from services like Google Earth continues to reveal traces of the site, including cropmarks that indicate where the inner enclosing bank once stood but has since been levelled. Located just 119 metres west of Pouladragoon Bridge, this moated site stands as a tangible reminder of medieval life in rural Limerick, when local landowners fortified their homes against the uncertainties of their age.
