Monuments, Carrownacross, Co. Mayo

On the 1838 Ordnance Survey six-inch map of Carrownacross in County Mayo, three small upright features are marked to the east of Loughkeeran holy well, labelled simply as 'Monuments'.

By the time the map was revised in 1920, the designation had quietly changed to 'Monuments (Site of)', which is cartographic shorthand for something already lost. Today there is nothing visible on the ground at all, and nobody is entirely certain what these structures ever were.

The most plausible suggestion is that they were penitential cairns, small piles of stone built up through repeated acts of devotion, typically as part of a pattern of prayer circuits associated with a sacred site. Their position immediately east of the Loughkeeran holy well fits that interpretation neatly. Holy wells in Ireland were frequently the focus of ritual movement, and auxiliary structures including cairns, stations, and upright stones often accumulated around them over centuries of local practice. Whether these three features belonged to a single coherent devotional arrangement or accrued more informally is not known. The landscape around them carried other marks of long settlement: a church lies roughly 400 metres to the east-northeast, and a rath, the circular earthwork enclosure typical of early medieval Irish farmsteads, sits about 170 metres to the south. The three monuments occupied, then, a patch of ground already layered with religious and domestic history.

What makes the site quietly compelling is precisely the gap between the confidence of the 1838 label and the honest uncertainty that followed. Someone surveying the area in the early nineteenth century thought these structures significant enough to name and record. Eighty years later, they were already a memory. Now the field holds nothing but the question of what was once considered worth marking on a map.
