Mound, Ballykeel, Co. Clare

In a corner of a field in Ballykeel, County Clare, a cluster of small grass-covered mounds sits quietly in pasture that has never been ploughed or reclaimed.

There are several of them, each roughly circular in shape and between five and seven metres across, rising gently from a west-facing slope. They are subtle enough that a person walking the field might not register them as anything more than ordinary unevenness in the ground, yet aerial photography has made them legible in a way that ground-level inspection cannot.

What makes this grouping particularly interesting is its setting within a large multiperiod field system, meaning the surrounding landscape preserves evidence of agricultural and land-use activity from more than one distinct historical period, layered over time. The mounds themselves have not been excavated or formally classified, so their precise purpose remains open. Subcircular earthen mounds of this scale in an Irish rural context can belong to a wide range of traditions, from Bronze Age burial to early medieval activity, though without investigation it would be speculation to assign this group to any one of them. The fact that this part of the field has escaped reclamation is significant; it is precisely because the land was left alone that these fragile surface features have survived at all.
