Mound, Ballyvulhane, Co. Limerick

Somewhere beneath a field in County Limerick, a small circular mound exists on paper but has almost entirely vanished from the ground.

It occupies the south-eastern quadrant of a larger field system near the townland boundary with Tankardstown, and for anyone arriving without prior knowledge of its existence, there would be nothing obvious to indicate that anything archaeological was ever there at all.

The mound came to light not through excavation or fieldwork on foot, but through the Bruff aerial photographic survey of 1986, recorded as Bruff 82 (1), AP 5/2108. Aerial survey of this kind has been responsible for identifying countless features across Ireland that centuries of ploughing, levelling, and pasture management have rendered invisible at ground level. The site sits roughly 50 metres north-west of a rectangular enclosure, which has its own separate record, and the proximity of the two features suggests this corner of the landscape was once rather more structured than its current appearance implies. Compiled by Fiona Rooney and uploaded to the record in May 2021, the entry notes that by the time Ordnance Survey Ireland captured orthophotography between 2005 and 2012, and again in later Google Earth imagery, no surface trace of the mound remained visible.

For anyone with a particular interest in the archaeology of the Bruff area, the site is in pasture and sits just inside the Ballyvulhane townland, immediately north of the boundary with Tankardstown. Because nothing protrudes above the grass, the practical experience of visiting is one of reading a landscape rather than observing a monument. The rectangular enclosure 50 metres to the south-east is also unverified on the ground, so the area rewards the kind of attention that comes with knowing what was once recorded from the air rather than what can currently be seen from eye level.
