Mound, Corduff (Castleknock By.), Co. Dublin

At the eastern fringe of a suburban open space in Corduff, within the old barony of Castleknock, there is a mound that most residents of the surrounding Warrenstown housing estate likely walk past without a second glance.

It measures roughly 28 metres in diameter and rises about 2 metres from the surrounding ground, dimensions modest enough that it could easily be dismissed as a quirk of landscaping or a forgotten spoil heap. It is not. It is an earthen mound of presumed archaeological significance, sitting quietly in a flood plain beside a stream that drains into the River Tolka, entirely smothered in brambles and bearing the accumulated indignities of construction scarping and decades of casual dumping.

Mounds of this kind are scattered across the Irish landscape, and their origins vary considerably. Some are natural features; others are early medieval burial mounds, the remains of mottes (the earthen mound component of a motte-and-bailey castle introduced by the Normans after the twelfth century), or simply the levelled remnants of earlier enclosed settlements. Without excavation, it is difficult to say with certainty what this particular mound represents, but its scale and form are consistent with features that have attracted archaeological classification. The site was recorded and compiled by Geraldine Stout, with an update by Christine Baker uploaded in January 2015, suggesting it remains on the radar of those who catalogue such things, even if it has not been subject to formal investigation.

Finding it requires some patience. The mound sits at the eastern end of the open green space associated with the Warrenstown estate in Corduff, close to the stream corridor feeding into the Tolka. The bramble cover is dense enough that the shape of the mound is easier to read from a short distance than from directly beside it. The flood plain setting means the ground underfoot can be soft, particularly in wetter months, so stout footwear is sensible. There is nothing formally interpreted here, no signage and no cleared path to the feature itself, which makes it the kind of place that rewards a slow look at the topography rather than any expectation of a polished experience.
