Mound, Frenchbrook, Co. Mayo

At Frenchbrook in County Mayo, there is a mound.

That plain description is, for now, almost everything that can be said with confidence about it. The monument is recorded, it has a name attached to a place, and it sits in the landscape waiting for the kind of formal attention that would tell us whether it is a burial mound, a settlement feature, a natural rise that attracted human activity, or something else entirely. That uncertainty is itself worth noting, because it points to how much of Ireland's archaeological fabric remains formally undescribed, even in an era of comprehensive survey programmes.
