That combination, a rath containing a formal inner enclosure containing deliberate stone constructions, is unusual enough to warrant attention. Most ringforts, the circular earthen or stone-banked farmsteads that once dotted the Irish countryside in their tens of thousands, contain no such internal arrangements. Whatever purpose these mounds served, it was considered worth encoding carefully in the landscape.

The site is known as Lisnaleagh, or in Irish Lios na Leacht, meaning roughly the ringfort of the mounds of stones. It appears on the 1842 edition of the Ordnance Survey map but had disappeared from the 1916 edition, suggesting that the place-name, if not the physical remains, had faded from common use by the early twentieth century. The earthwork itself is a univallate rath, meaning it has a single enclosing bank, and it sits on gently rising ground with a northern slope. Parts of the northern and eastern bank have been absorbed into later field boundaries, distorting the original line somewhat. The interior sits at a higher level than the surrounding land. Within its southern sector lies the rectangular stone enclosure, roughly 15 metres by 20 metres internally, with small gaps of around a metre each on the western and eastern sides. Inside that enclosure, the three stone mounds measure between 2.6 and 4.2 metres in length; the largest lies to the south, the smallest in the middle. C.
