Ritual/Ceremonial
At the southern bank of an early ecclesiastical enclosure in Kildee, County Cork, a small mound sits connected to the enclosure bank by a low rise of earth.
That in itself might not seem remarkable, but what makes this particular corner of a religious site unusual is what was found at its base: a concentration of metal slag, the glassy, porous waste left behind when ore is smelted or metal is worked. The combination of a burial or ritual mound with industrial debris, positioned deliberately within the boundary of a sacred enclosure, raises quiet questions about how early medieval communities understood the relationship between religious space and practical craft.
