Mound, Raheen, Co. Wicklow

In the townland of Raheen, a circular earthen mound roughly fifty metres across and two and a half metres high sits on a gentle slope above the River Slaney, and almost nobody walking past it would know it was there.

That last detail is the quietly unsettling part: the mound is not visible at ground level. Whatever has accumulated around it over the centuries, whether vegetation, field boundary changes, or simply the gradual blurring of a feature that no longer registers in the working landscape, has rendered it effectively invisible to the casual eye.

Mounds of this general type appear throughout Ireland and can belong to very different periods and purposes. Some are burial mounds from the Bronze Age or earlier, raised over chambers or cremation deposits; others are the remains of ringforts or mottes, the earthen platforms thrown up by Norman settlers in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries as bases for timber towers. Without excavation, it is rarely possible to say with certainty which category applies, and the Raheen mound carries no such clarifying record. What is known is its orientation, sitting on a south-east-facing slope, and its relationship to the Slaney below, a river that has served as a corridor through County Wicklow for as long as people have moved through this part of Leinster. That a feature of this scale, a footprint wider than many parish churches, should survive here without drawing much attention is itself a small puzzle worth pausing over.
