Mound, Thornfield, Co. Galway

In the townland of Thornfield in County Galway, a mound sits in the landscape, recorded and classified but not yet fully explained.

That much is certain. Earthen mounds of this kind appear throughout Ireland in considerable variety: some are burial mounds raised in the Neolithic or Bronze Age, others are the remains of Norman mottes, the raised platforms on which timber castles were built after the invasion of the twelfth century, and still others began as natural features that accumulated ritual or practical significance over time. Which category this particular mound belongs to, and what history it carries, remains for the moment a matter of the archive rather than public record.
