Ogham stone, Baile An Tsagairt, Co. Kerry

A low hillock between Dingle Harbour and Trabeg is home to one of the more quietly remarkable concentrations of ogham stones in Ireland.

Nine of them, gathered together within a circular stone enclosure at the summit, have been arranged so that eight form a ring and one sits at the centre. Ogham is an early medieval script in which letters are represented by notches and strokes cut along the edge of a stone, most commonly used to record personal names and, occasionally, lineage. What is unusual here is not just the number of stones in one place, but their physical character: these are mostly pulvinar boulders, meaning oval, water-rolled stones rather than the tall upright slabs more commonly associated with ogham. Their rounded, smooth forms suggest they were not quarried for the purpose but gathered from somewhere else entirely.

The scholar R. A. S. Macalister recorded the nine stones at the site in 1945, noting that they closely resemble stones found on Minard storm beach, roughly six miles away. The site itself, known as An Cheallúnach or An Lisín, encompasses the remains of Ballintaggart church and an old burial ground, suggesting the enclosure has served as a place of some significance across several periods. The stones were evidently collected and brought together at some point, though precisely when or by whom is not recorded. A tenth ogham stone was discovered in the 1980s, though it barely breaks the surface, protruding only twenty-four centimetres above the ground, easily missed by anyone not looking carefully.
