Ogham stone, Greenhill, Co. Cork

Local belief around Greenhill in County Cork holds that ogham stones lie buried in the surrounding fields, and the landscape seems inclined to prove the point.

Ogham is an early medieval Irish script in which letters are represented by notches and lines cut along the edge of a stone, and Greenhill has quietly accumulated several such finds across a fairly small area. The stone in question turned up in 1906 when a landowner was lowering a headland, that is, cutting back a raised earthen boundary between fields, and found himself unexpectedly in possession of an inscribed standing stone.

The inscription was recorded by the scholar R. A. S. Macalister in 1945 as reading CATTUBUTTAS MAQ, with the second word trailing off at a broken edge, leaving the formula, almost certainly a patronymic, incomplete. The name Cattubuttas is otherwise unattested in this form, which gives the stone a mild linguistic curiosity beyond its survival alone. The stone is not an isolated find. Another ogham stone stands roughly 40 metres to the south in an adjacent field, and a further example was found around 900 metres to the south-east near Burnfort. White, writing in the early twentieth century, also recorded a scatter of broken stones in the same field showing faint traces of ogham marks, though these appear to have since vanished. The stone itself measures 1.54 metres in length and lies against a field fence, sheltered by a semicircular cattle grid installed in 1985. When the grid was being laid down, a short excavation by the Office of Public Works revealed a shallow modern trench cutting into a much larger, older ditch, possibly the remnant of an ancient enclosure. The curve of the field fence at that point may itself follow the line of this enclosure, even though nothing of it is visible above ground.
