Ogham stone, Kilcoolaght, Co. Kerry

At Kilcoolaght burial ground in County Kerry, a small damaged stone lies flat on the ground, its surface carrying one of the oldest forms of writing in Ireland.

Ogham is an early medieval script in which letters are represented by sets of notches and strokes cut along the edge of a stone, and this particular example is one of seven, possibly eight, such stones gathered within the same enclosure, a concentration that makes the site quietly remarkable even among Kerry's famously ogham-rich landscape.

The stone itself is modest in size, measuring just 0.73 metres long, and the inscription it carries has not survived intact. Carved along two angles and across the top of the stone, the text was interrupted when a portion of that upper edge spalled away at some point in the past. The scholar R.A.S. Macalister, working in 1945, read the remaining letters as ...]ECC MAQI L[UGUQ]RRIT and proposed that the damaged initial name had originally been RITTUVVECC, though the reconstruction is necessarily speculative. The formula MAQI, meaning "son of" in Primitive Irish, is a standard ogham construction, so the inscription almost certainly recorded a personal name and lineage in the usual commemorative manner. The burial ground itself, known in Irish as Cill Chuallachta, also preserves a local tradition recorded by the antiquarian Richard Rolt Brash: a church was said to have stood on a rectangular patch of untilled ground a few yards from the cilleen, a small burial enclosure typically associated with unbaptised infants. No physical trace of that church remains visible today. The stones within the site are now protected behind iron railings erected in the 1940s, and the site carries a preservation order dating to 1935.
