These are not burial mounds or field clearance heaps but penitential stations, places where people came to pray, to kneel, and to perform acts of devotion as part of a structured religious practice. The tradition of moving between a series of fixed outdoor stations, reciting prayers at each, was once widespread across Ireland, particularly in areas with strong local saint associations, and the cairns at Fahee represent a quiet, weathered survival of that custom on the exposed limestone uplands above Glencolumbkille.

The group sits at the top of a series of hairpin bends on a ridge of rough grazing, and at least one of the individual cairns measures roughly 2.3 metres north to south and 1.6 metres east to west, rising to about 1.1 metres in height. It is somewhat robbed out at the base on its eastern side, suggesting either gradual disturbance over time or the removal of stones for other uses. The cairns were formally recorded as penitential stations in the Record of Monuments and Places in 1996, drawing on a map annotation made by Tom Coffey in 1994. A photograph from 1946 held in the National Folklore Collection describes them as stone-heap memorials, a phrase that hints at the layered significance these structures held in living memory not so long ago. Glencolumbkille Church and its associated graveyard lie roughly 800 metres downhill to the south-east, a proximity that reinforces the devotional geography of the wider area.
