Platform, Grangebeg, Co. Tipperary

At the western end of a long rectangular field in Grangebeg, County Tipperary, a cluster of earthworks sits quietly in gently undulating ground, largely unnoticed.

Among them is a roughly semi-circular platform, measuring somewhere between nineteen and twenty-five metres north to south and just over thirty metres east to west, defined by a shallow scarp no more than thirty centimetres high. That modest rise in the ground is easy to miss, yet it forms part of a complex that includes at least nine separate enclosures spread across the same area.

The earthworks correspond broadly to features recorded on the second edition Ordnance Survey six-inch map, published in 1906, which suggests this landscape had already attracted cartographic attention by the early twentieth century, even if its origins remain uncertain. The platform itself sits to the north-east of what may be the remains of a church, abutting the northern field boundary, with a further enclosure immediately to its east. Platforms of this kind are sometimes associated with ecclesiastical or settlement activity, serving as raised or levelled ground adjacent to a focal structure, though in this case the purpose has not been definitively established. The possible church nearby gives the grouping a tentative religious dimension, and the density of enclosures in such a compact area points to a site that was once considerably more active than it now appears.

The northern side of the platform is obscured by scrub, which limits how clearly the scarp can be read from that direction. The earthworks are low and subtle throughout, the kind of features that reward slow, careful observation rather than a quick glance across a field.
