Platform – peatland, Cooleeny, Co. Tipperary

Beneath the surface of Derryville Bog in County Tipperary, waterlogged for centuries, lie the remains of nineteen ancient platforms, low wooden structures built directly into wetland ground that was never meant to hold them.

Wetland platforms of this kind, sometimes interpreted as working surfaces, storage areas, or staging points at the margins of boggy terrain, survive precisely because the anaerobic conditions of a bog suppress the decay that would long since have erased them on dry land. What makes this cluster unusual is both its density and its span of time.

A field survey carried out in 1999 documented the structures in detail. Most were built from a combination of brushwood and roundwood, the basic vocabulary of prehistoric woodland carpentry, though two examples showed more deliberate construction using woven brushwood, and three were held in place with small anchoring pegs. Radiocarbon dating was possible at four of the platforms, and the results are striking: the earliest dates to the Late Bronze Age, somewhere between 792 and 526 BC, while another falls in the Iron Age, between 351 and 120 BC. That gap of several centuries suggests the bog was not used intensively in a single episode but returned to, perhaps by different communities, across a long stretch of prehistory. At nine of the sites, the timber species could be identified, and the range, alder, ash, birch, hazel, and willow, reflects exactly the kind of mixed carr woodland that would have fringed a midland bog in those periods. Each species has different properties; hazel bends without splitting, alder resists prolonged wetting, willow is fast-growing and easily coppiced, and the choice of materials suggests a practical knowledge of the local environment rather than any single standardised technique.
