Promontory fort – coastal, Dún Dubháin Íochtarach, Co. Donegal

On the rugged coastline of County Donegal sits Dún Dubháin Íochtarach, a promontory fort that once served as a defensive stronghold for its ancient inhabitants.

These coastal fortifications, built on naturally protected headlands jutting into the sea, were common throughout Ireland during the Iron Age and early medieval periods. The steep cliffs provided natural defences on three sides, whilst earthen banks and ditches would have been constructed across the landward approach, creating a formidable barrier against raiders and invaders.
